Powassan picks up win No. 44 in triumph over Timmins

POWASSAN, Ont. – The Powassan Voodoos picked up a pair of goals, including the game-winner, from Kobe Desmond to help lead his side to their 44th victory of the season, a 4-2 triumph over the Timmins Rock in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League meeting Saturday at the Powassan Sportsplex.

Timmins did get the early jump in this one as they notched the lone tally of the first period when Jace Soroko supplied his seventh tally of the season at 5:50.

An early power play in the middle session helped Powassan to tie it when Desmond collected his 15th goal at 3:03 as he scored for a third-straight outing.

The Voodoos then added another 73 seconds later with Quintin Loon-Stewardson picking up his 19th with an even strength effort.

The Rock countered to notch the equalizer at 15:50 with Grant McClellan scoring on the power play to send it to the third period tied at 2-2.

Going back and forth, Powassan regained the lead just past the six-minute mark of the final frame with Desmond supplying another.

Special teams allowed the Voodoos to add another a couple shifts later as rookie Harrison Israels scored on the power play to pick-up his team-leading 36th goal to finish things off offensively.

Tyson Gilmour had one of the assists on the play giving him 50th overall on the season while extending a point streak to nine games in the process.

Cade Herd and Eric Mondoux had two assists each for Powassan.

Voodoos’ starter Christian Cicigoi made 34 saves on the night to record the win and improve to 14-1-1 in his past 16 appearances for league-leading Powassan.

Rock netminder Jordan Yaremchuk faced 36 stops in defeat for Timmins.
