SUDBURY – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced today that Abitibi Eskimos goaltender Sylvain Miron has been named the Gongshow Gear Inc. player of the month for February.
In six starts during the month that was the 18-year-old rookie netminder, who hails from Iroquois Falls, was unbeaten in regulation time posting a 4-0-0-2 record helping Abitibi pick-up 10 of a possible 12 points in the NOJHL standings.
His efforts saw him register a solid 2.12 goals-against average in that span along with a firm .933 save percentage.
Miron and the rest of his Abitibi teammates return to the ice Saturday evening as they host the Espanola Rivermen in a pivotal match-up at Jus Jordan Arena, which gets underway at 7:30 p.m.
Espanola currently leads the Eskimos by one point in the race for third place overall.
Honourable mention for January player of the month honours went to forwards Darcy Haines of the Soo Thunderbirds and Samuel Wilbur of the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners.
Haines amassed 17 points in nine games on four goals and 13 assists for Sault Ste. Marie while Wilbur had seven tallies and nine helpers for 16 points in eight outings for Kirkland Lake.
