NOJHL – Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the Week

SUDBURY – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced  Monday that goaltender Mario Culina of the Soo Thunderbirds as well as forwards Cody Gratton of the Cochrane Crunch and Brady Clouthier of the Abitibi Eskimos have been named the Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the week for the period ending Nov. 23.

All three also represented the NOJHL during the recently staged Central Canada Cup Challenge in Toronto.

MARIO CULINA, (G) SOO THUNDERBIRDS – In two starts last week the 17-year-old Sault Ste. Marie native won both of them helping the Thunderbirds maintain their hold on top spot in the NOJHL standings.

Culina began by turning aside 40 of 41 shots he faced to backstop his club to a 4-1 road victory at Sudbury last Wednesday.

Two nights later he won again, finishing with 30 stops, in a 3-2 overtime triumph at Elliot Lake.

The T-Birds netminder currently leads all NOJHL goalkeepers in wins with 10, goals-against average at 2.09 and save percentage at .931.

CODY GRATTON, (F) COCHRANE CRUNCH – Gratton continues his offensive prowess for the first-year Crunch as he added to his totals by amassing eight points in two outings as Cochrane picked up three of a possible four points in a weekend home-and-home with Abitibi.

He began by scoring once and setting up three others in an overtime setback vs. the Eskimos Friday.

The next evening he buried the game-winner in OT to go along with an earlier tally and two assists as the Crunch won in extra time against Abitibi.

He now has six four-point games to his credit so far in the 201-4-15 campaign.

The 20-year-old Sudbury product is presently tied for the league lead in points with 45 and tops all skaters in goals with 26.

Gratton is also sixth in assists with 19 and leads the way in power play markers with eight and game-winners with five.

BRADY CLOUTHIER, (F) ABITIBI ESKIMOS – The Eskimos veteran forward also had a big week for his squad by picking up five points in the two-game set vs. Cochrane.

The 20-year-old, who hails from Arnprior, Ont., began his week by notching three goals in an OT decision against Abitibi on Friday.

Clouthier also supplied his team-leading 18th tally of the season and added an assist in a contest that saw his team fall in OT to the Crunch.

He sits third overall in NOJHL scoring with 36 points while his 18 markers are also third best in the NOJHL.
