Timmins takes narrow 2-1 decision in Blind River

BLIND RIVER, Ont. – A Riley Brousseau goal eight and a half minutes into the second period held up as the game-winner as the visiting Timmins Rock went on to earn a narrow 2-1 decision over the Blind River Beavers in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play Saturday at the Blind River Community Centre.

Just moments after a power play expired, Timmins opened the night’s scoring at 13:17 of the first frame when Karter Renouf connected for a third straight outing after posting back-to-back game-winning goals in his past two outings.

It stayed 1-0 Rock into the second stanza when they extended their cushion as Brousseau finished off a Tyler Gilberds feed.

Picking up a power play in the latter portion of the frame, the NOJHL’s leading goal-getter, Caleb Serre, buried his league-best 29th at 16:05 to bring the home side back to within one. It was also his 14th on the man advantage, which also tops all skaters.

The rest of the way was scoreless thanks to the efforts of goaltenders of Timmins’ Tyler Masternak and Blind River’s Jackson Hjelle.

Masternak finished with 46 saves to record the win as they improved to 20-3-1-1 on the season.

Making 35 saves in defeat was Hjelle as the Beavers record dipped to 18-7-1-2 overall.
